Dertig jaar Aandachtscentrum Den Haag

The Bulgarian artist Christo Christov exhibits his work in The Hague in April

Christo Christov, a well-known artist from Varna, Bulgaria (http://www.christochristov.com/) is showing his work in The Hague.

From 2nd of April till 18th of April eight of his paintings are being exhibited in the Aandachtscentrum in The Hague http://www.aandachtscentrumdenhaag.nl/.  Later this year, from November till January, the Aandachtscentrum will host more of his work, which until then will be kept in The Hague.

Before coming to The Hague, 70 works of his paintings, drawings and sculptures have been shown in the  Center for Benedictine Spirituality to the monastery ‘Abdij van Egmond; Sint-Adelbertabdij’ in Egmond aan Zee, with big success!

The themes of Christo Chrsitov’s work encompass Bulgarian traditions and Christian symbolism. Very often Greek mythology is part of the rich heritage that connects Bulgarians to that past.

The binding theme of the works now exhibited is the Road, the road marked by the Cross and the Resurrection. The Christian themes are mostly present as a personal revelation, reached by the experience of the ‘cross’.

The Christian sensitivity, but also the pagan primal forces are often present in the compositions of Christov.

His paintings are monumental in their story lines and in their color relations, messages and effects, whose vitality is to be sensed in many of them (to name a few: ‘Silence’, ‘Flight’, ‘Lonely Coasts’, and especially ‘The Road ‘and ‘Feeling of Flight’).

His sculptures are most poetic. You will discover this in ‘Flight’, in ‘Equilibrium’, in ‘Everyone Has His Own Horse’, ‘One, Two, Three… One, Two, Three’, and in most of the others: ‘Orpheus’, ‘Prayer’.

For ‘ArtNovinite.com’ Christo Christov shares his thoughts:  ‘Sculpture work is poetry! A sad, ecstatic, expressive, distinguished…’  Pure and sincere!

For all the visitors of the work of Christov -  his poetic messages are there, waiting for you!

New Pope, new Patriarchs

Since 13 March, the Roman Catholic Church has a new head. Cardinal Bergoglio will as Pope Francis I, lead the Roman world movement. With 8 years (2005-2013) his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, had a fairly brief pontificate. His predecessor again, Pope John Paul II (1978-2005) had one of the longer terms for the highest office in the Vatican. Also historically is that almost a record.

Patriarch

The media attention for the Pope contest reminded me of the for American presidential elections A stark contrast, however, were the elections for the patriarchs of the Orthodox churches in Eastern Europe. In recent years in Russia, Serbia and Bulgaria were  new Patriarchs chosen. A church renewal that was scarcely noticed in the West.

Serbia

Patriarch Pavle died in 2009 at the age of 95. He headed from 1990 the Serbian Orthodox Church. Although the highest Orthodox Church ministry is officially neutral,  in the 1990’s Pavle was regarded as a religious pillar of the Milosevic regime. His 80-year-old successor Gavrilovich is considered to be more moderate. He should be the right person to support the Serbian way towards a future EU membership.

Sveti Sava church in Belgrade

Russia

In 2008 passes away the Russian Patriarch Aleksei II, since 1990 was the head of the largest Orthodox church in the world. He was succeeded in 2009 by Kiril I. The position of the Moscow church head is not quite that clear. Formally church and state are separated, but the Russian Orthodox Church is still seen as an extension of the Putin regime.

Patriarch Kiril I

Bulgaria

At the end of 2012 died at the age of 98, the Bulgarian Patriarch Maxim. He held on to office longer than any other modern orthodox church leader.
In 1971, his old friend, the then dictator Todor Zhivkov, helped him to the highest clerical office. In the 1990’s, however, it was overshadowed by the conflict with Pimen. For a number of years the latter headed an Alternatice  Church.
In recent years Patriarch Maxim was rarely seen public. He was 41 years Patriarch. Thus he breaks even the Roman Catholic record. In February 2013, he was succeeded by the 76-year-old Neofit.
